I have to be very careful as I talk about this part of my life. I shall not be sharing certain details because it is important to maintain the magical mystery. You understand magic. It requires a delicate touch.
Every Autumn, I get to join a delightful magical sisterhood. We put on our hats and gather up our brooms and head down to a sweet little village where we entertain and enchant visitors young and old.
As a witch, I get to sing and dance and make up funny stories, but mainly I sing. I will go up to a table of people and ask a little bit about their lives, then I’ll make up a song for them. I spend 5 hours at a time smiling non-stop. I can’t stop! I’m having too much fun! During this time, I will traverse up and down stairs, and then I’ll dance in front of a huge fireplace. The other night, 2 little girls came up and asked me to dance with them. We spent time making up a fun dance that included a grape vine, step-touch, touching the ceiling, stomps, and a chicken flap.
When I got home, my body was devastated. I am too old and too fat to be witching all night! It is ridiculous how much energy it takes to sing and dance for so many hours.
But I love it so much. I love the laughter and the joy. I made up a song for two women who had recently divorced from their husbands. We sang about their newfound joy and new beginnings and their beauty and strength. I made up a song for a little girl who had just lost 4 teeth. “Your teeth want you to know they miss you soooo!” I sang for a woman who was about to have a baby, “Your little girl is so excited to see you!”
I know this Halloween is different. As a witch, I made sure to wear a special mask the whole time I was out and about among the people. We have designed costumes that have gloves and masks to help prevent spreading any illness.
We can exercise safety and caution, while encouraging the magic and whimsy of this Halloween season. We can still turn up the silly songs, buy up candy to share, dress up or dress down, paint our faces, and dance in front of the fires! Happy Halloween week to you and yours!
